The "feds" set the frequencies and the states choose the radar and laser equipment. Australian Police Radar (microwave) Bands and Laser frequencies (near infrared spectrum) are allocated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority which is a department of the Federal (Commonwealth) Government. States and territories may add new equipment using these frequencies.

There are seven (7) types of "beam transmission and reception" Speed Traps used in the states of Australia. Four (4) use doppler radar as the speed measuring medium and three (3) employ pulsed or scanning lasers.

  • 1: Radar Down-the-road (mobile)
  • 2: Radar Down-the-road (hand-held)
  • 3: Radar Across-the-road (slant beam /speed camera) (mobile or fixed)
  • 4: Radar Down-the-road (Lane-specific parabolic) (fixed speed camera)
  • 5: Laser Down-the-road (hand-held or tripod mounted with video & still camera)
  • 6: Laser Across-the-road (slant beam laser speed camera)
  • 7: Laser Area-scanning (scanning laser speed camera)
